We Americans like our comfort food. We are always trying to turn the unfamiliar into the familiar. You have to agree, this is a better than the old tradition of shunning the unfamiliar altogether! American fusion food is a great example of this new-found fascination. Dishes such as Mexican pizza and Asian-style hot dogs are just the beginning of our efforts to bring world flavors into the main stream. The Best Eats Are On The Streets~ Vietnamese Banh Mi Sandwich Street food is a weakness of mine. When I travel anywhere, it's the first thing I look for. You often get the real sense of a country's (or city's) culinary clout by what you purchase from a rickety cart on a bustling corner. Luckily, I have the cure for such a ravenous appetite. It's called a muffaletta. Muffalettas are a New Orleans creation. A large double meat, double cheese sandwich with the mother of all sauces on top. … [Read more...]

I used to dream of white Christmases, snowy winters, sledding, skiing...snow angels. Growing up in Oklahoma, we were lucky to get a couple inches of slushy snow a year. Just enough to run out and erect a tiny and dingy snowman before it melted away in the 70 degree weather the following day. Snow was something to look forward to. As I'm sure many of you are experiencing, this year in North Carolina we are the victims of an uncharacteristic and insurmountable snow storm. 2 1/2 months of consistent snowfall. The first week was great! The kids missed a couple days of school. We walked down the … [Read more...]
